Teaching Kids To “Be Internet Awesome”

New Curriculum Aimed At Teaching Digital Citizenship And Internet Safety

Google has partnered with the Internet Keep Safe Coalition and teachers from around the country to give educators a classroom curriculum for teaching kids digital citizenship and ways to be safe on Internet.  The program is built on five key areas:
  • Be Internet Smart: Share with care
  • Be Internet Alert: Don’t fall for fake
  • Be Internet Strong: Secure your secrets
  • Be Internet Kind: It’s cool to be kind
  • Be Internet Brave: When in doubt, talk it out
The lesson plans revolve around an interactive game called Interland that allows students to play a fun, cloud-based game.  In the game, kids combat hackers, phishers, oversharers and bullies, practicing the skills they need to be good digital citizens.  For example, phase one has students play as a robot racing a hacker to protect the treasure in a tower.  As the students are playing the game, they are really learning how to create good passwords (long words, capital letters, special characters, etc.).
